The first building for The Orchard, a 2-hectare community development along MacArthur Highway in Pampanga, is a response to the typical form of provincial malls in the area. As opposed to an enclosed box structure that relies on air-conditioning, the design prioritizes outdoor spaces that encourage a sense of community among locals and out-of-towners plying the busy highway.

Orienting the back of the building towards the street, while seemingly counterintuitive, is a necessary move to shield the establishments from the afternoon sun, and kindles interest over what to expect inside the development. Repeating the gable roof throughout the building  heightens people’s familiarity with the form and grants individuality for each establishment. The rigidity of the roof outline is counterbalanced by the garden, with its berms and shrubs where people can stroll around during daytime.
